The setting of Final Fantasy IX is a world known as Gaia, which is divided into four seperate Kingdoms. Cid, the leader of the peaceful kingdom Lindblum (which Zidane is hailed from), hires a small group of fighters to abduct Garnet, the princess of Alexandria, a neighboring Kingdom. The reason for this kidnapping was to find information concerning the Queen's plans, who is ordering her troops to attack nearby villages. However, when the party kidnaps Garnet, she joins the group from her own free will, as well as her bodyguard, Steiner, after finally realizing that the Queen is out of control. When the Queen finds out about this, she retaliates by sending out an army of Black Mages after the party. Vivi, a wizard who is neutral to both sides, ends up fighting alongside Zidane, Garnet, and Steiner as he gets caught right in the middle of the almost endless chaos.
And, not only that, but we have even more information concerning the gameplay. FFIX will return to the four-person party, which many of us have come to know and love. You can also choose to send people to the front or back row in battle, depending on a character's abilities and weapons. Replacing the Limit Break will be the new "Trance Mode", although it works almost the same way. Like in FFVII, when a character sustains enough damage, he will go into a trance and will activate certain abilities that weren't available before. Also, certain characters can only access certian abilities. Zidane, a theif, can steal, while mages can only access certain types of magic, depending on their field of magic. Also, for those of you who weren't really fond of drawing spells, guess what? MP is back, after it's short break from the series.
Also, equipment-wise, we're going back to the good old days of the SNES were armor and swrods were equiped by class. For example, you can give a Thief a knife, but Knights require a Sword. In addition, every item in the game has it's own special abilities which can be learned when a character equips that item. One example is when Vivi's black mage staff is equiped. Once equiped, Vivi will be able to cast such magic spells as Osmosis and Fire during battle. Each of these spells have their own Action Points gauge, which when full, will allow Vivi to continue using these spells even after unequiping the staff. To gain the AP, you must fight with the particular item equiped. In addition to all that, an Active Time Events system will be implemented. What this system does is allow you to split up your party and search town individually.
Anyways, until we can actually play the game, we diehard fans are going to have to wait until Fall 2000, and Europe might have to wait even longer. Nonetheless, check back for more Final Fantasy IX updates!
